Window Makeover

Since I stand at the kitchen sink every day, I want a cute window to look out. That was not the case when we moved in. There was no curtain and there was an ugly light fixture over my head. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this project, first because I am cheap, and second because we eventually want to gut this kitchen and I don’t want to spend a lot on a light fixture if I am not sure what look we will end up with. This is what we started with..
SONY DSC

and here is where we ended..
SONY DSC
I found the pendant at Menards on clearance for $25, bought a yard of fabric and some fringe from Hobby Lobby for $8, coupon used of course! I picked up a decorative curtain rod and 2 spring rods for about $14 for all.
SONY DSC
I might paint the inside of the light an pretty teal…
I wanted a pom pom fringe, but I couldn’t find any in the right color, this is a little old ladyish, but I like it!
SONY DSC

Jon removed the wood thing, no clue if it has a name, above the sink just by unscrewing from inside the cabinets. I used the same method I used here to create a faux roman shade, and I just hot glued the fringe on. Don’t judge me! Ha! I have no clue where my sewing machine is, and we had company coming over the next morning, so I needed it done quick. Who am I kidding, I hate sewing! Anyways it took only about an hour to put this all together and I think it looks super cute!

We Moved!

Since my last post, a ton has happened! We moved! Holy crap I never want to do that again! (we will have to though!) It was the most annoying and stressful thing I have ever gone through! As a seller, you have no control over the situation. We had an offer, it wasn’t what we wanted, but it was the only one we had, so we took it, after some negotiation of course! Then we waited and waited and waited. The crap heads buying our house took their sweet old time getting everything to the bank and we had to give the 2 extensions. We were under contract with them for almost 60 days! That’s a long time when you have 2 little kids and are living in a town that is different from your spouse!! We didn’t have the best experience with our realtor. We just felt left out of the loop. We were told we were going to close on the 15th of Oct and on the 14th we were told the buyers just submitted their paperwork. O.M.G. We were freaking out because we had an offer in on a house and we didn’t want to lose it! Luckily we didn’t. We had to pay a per diem to the lady we bought our new house from so she wouldn’t put it back on the market. It sucked! Finally we closed on both houses and it was moving time! We closed on a Wednesday in Columbus and then drove up to Youngstown to pack up. We had planned on driving back down on Friday with a big truck. Well on Friday morning, I get a call from the company we rented a truck from and we were told they didn’t have one for us. Really! They didn’t even sound sorry! I hate them! Luckily we have the best family ever and my dad and my father in law helped load up their cars and vans and we took as much stuff as we could fit into 6 vehicles. The following weekend we went back and got a huge U-Haul and packed up more. Well, the damn thing broke down on the side of 71!

Luckily (I guess) a mechanic came out and had it back up and running in about an hour! 2 days later we drove up again and got the last bit of things out of the house and cleaned up. I feel the need to tell you that the same people who took their sweet time to get their paperwork to the bank, kept asking us when they would get the keys (we agreed to 30 days from closing). Jerks! So they now have the keys and we have started settling into our new place. I have slowly started doing small craft projects and have spruced up a few spaces. We are very excited to make this new house our home. We all still feel like we are on vacation or something. The kids keep asking about the white house. God do I miss that house. It was far from perfect. It was cold and drafty and dirty all the time, but it was our home!! I know this place will feel like that soon, but its hard to be in that in-between place. The hubs said no big projects for a few months. I don’t know if I can wait that long!! I’m itching to paint the living room, and ohh the kitchen needs gutted and the bathrooms, egh. Luckily Christmas has kept me preoccupied and I haven’t ripped down any cabinets yet! Now I just need to decide what to do first! I will keep you all posted on my crafts and projects in our new house. Also, I will post some pics of the new house soon!

$5 day!

shit! I am a day late for $5 craft on the 5th…ok and maybe 2 months late too.. sorry. With all the craziness of the hubs living in a different town these days and selling the house and buying a new one and two toddlers, I haven’t had time for much crafting. and that sucks! On a positive note, we should be moving in about 2 weeks! Hooray for living with your hottie husband!! I plan on getting back to the blog on a regular basis again!

So back to my craft! I am digging washi tape, I found it at Pat Catans, I think it was on sale 2 rolls for $3! I picked up gold and purple..

SONY DSCI took a vase I had, probably from the dollar store, and just wrapped the tape around it to make three stripes. It took a total of 2 minutes and it looks so jazzy!

SONY DSC

I cut a few hydrangeas from the yard and my mantel looked bright and sparkly!

SONY DSC

(so this craft was done like 6 weeks ago, just pretend like I put some pretty fall looking flowers in the vase!)

She Rocks!

Not doing much around here but cleaning lately. When your house is on the market and you have 2 toddlers, you never stop. I have to set my alarm 30 minutes earlier every morning so I have time to sweep and do the dishes before I leave for work. Things that are usually done only once or twice a week are now being done everyday just in case someone wants to see the house. ugh. I am so over selling a house!

I did find a little time to spruce up a rocking chair my aunt gave me. The fabric was 50% off at Hobby Lobby and I had some padding left over from the kitchen chairs, so it was a really inexpensive project. The kind I like!

Amelia is loving it! She won’t let anyone else sit in it.

Ain’t it cute?! The little girl and the chair!!

Last weekend I made the cutest cheapest bird feeder!

SONY DSC

I took a plate that I picked up a a thrift store for .75 cents and used a stair banister as the base.  We bought the banister a few months ago to replace a missing one, but Jon cut it too short so it was sitting in the burn pile. I pulled it out and used some leftover spray paint on it. I hammered it into the ground about 6-8 inches and then used a glob of Liquid Nails to adhere the plate to the base. Once it was dry, I let the kids put some bird seed on it.

SONY DSC

The kids love sitting on the porch watching the birds eat. Amelia is on food duty and is always checking to make sure the “burdies” have enough food. HA! Too Cute!

$5 days

It’s the 5th so that means it’s time for a cheap lil project. This week I was all about sprucing up the outdoors. So I grabbed an old dirty boring planter I already had and a can of $4 spray from WalMart and went to town!

SONY DSC

Soo much better!

SONY DSCFor the flowers, I just set a hanging basket we had into the planter. So Simple! I am hoping  we can get the rest of the patio all put together and get our garden planted this weekend. I saw some cute garden markers on Pinterest I want to make. I’ll show em to ya when they are done!!

MIA

Sorry I fell off the edge for a while there. Life got in the way I guess. It’s been crazy around here. We went on vacation a few weeks ago, we went to Rehoboth, DE. We love it there! Anyways, while we were enjoying the warm/cold sun, we found out the hubs got a new job! wahoo! But it is in a town 3 hours away. And he had to start 2 days after we got home from vacation…  Boo. So in the past few weeks, I, and Jon on his weekends, have done nothing but paint and clean and finish up all those little projects you start, but then move on to the next thing before your done with the first. All to get the house ready to be put on the market. Tear!Tthe only crappy part about moving is having to sell our house. Oh and it sucks to leave our family and friends and quit my job. I like my job.. mostly. But we are moving to Columbus where there is soo much more to do and we actually have a bunch of family and friends there too so we will be ok! Back to selling the house. It sucks! It makes me sad. I feel like we are leaving it unfinished. There is still so much we wanted to do. Not to mention that we have 4 bedrooms, 2300 sq feet and almost 2 acres and we will soon be paying twice as much for half the house. Yuck.

So then I was thinking, since we will no longer be living in my grandpas house, can I still have a blog called mygrandpashouse?? well. hmm. Maybe we will by someone elses  grandpas house and you guys can read all about us redoing it! So I said screw it, lets keep it going! horray! Aren’t you excited??!! So I will probably not be doing too much in the furniture redos, but smaller less messy crafts for a while.. I do have to keep my house tidy! Also, no thrifting for a while. I hate it, I did go to GW this weekend and luckily they didn’t have too much in the way of furniture, my weakness. But I am not sure if I went in and the had a great piece I’d be able to walk away from it, so I might have to just stay out until we move. I’m already getting some withdraw shakes just thinking about it. Buy my basement looks like a furniture cemetary. And my neighbors probably think we are crazy because in the past 3 weeks, we put a nightstand, a desk, a curio, a table, and 3, yes 3 dressers at the curb. They were all taken and none went to the garbage so that’s good. I guess I might be a slight furniture hoarder. But we are purging these days!!

Back to getting the house ready.. my house has never been cleaner, and damn my house looks good clean! And with a bunch of the little projects finished up, there is less stress about finishing up stuff and always feeling like we have a million things to do. It’s unfortunate that it has to happen this way, and I think we will definitely try to finish things in the next place. Or not, we’ll see! So here’s a few things we worked on..

I painted the ceiling medallion. 3 years ago, the dining room was purple and we painted the medallion the same color, and we never got around to painting it back to white. 2o minutes it was done.. and looks sooo much nicer!

PicMonkey Collage111

We finished our closet!! I love it and I am so bummed I won’t get to enjoy it for years.. and look a those floors.. 77 cents a sq ft! love em!

PicMonkey Collage3344

We also painted the trim around the windows and washed the house and picked up a bunch of hanging baskets. Its looking good!

SONY DSC

Now to put a sign in the yard and be get down to Columbus and be a family again!

Don’t mind my hair, I was on vacation!

I will keep you all posted on whats going on!!

$5 craft day!

Happy Cinco De Mayo! Sine it is the 5th of the month, it’s time for another $5 craft! I made cute chalkboard wine glasses.  I had all the supplies lying around, so for me it was free, but if you had to buy the supplies, you’d be right around $5. I have seen cute glasses for a buck a piece at the dollar store, and the spray paint I picked up at Hobby Lobby, use your 40% off coupon!!

SONY DSC

I was planning on taping the glasses off at the top, but it’s hard to tape off a circle, so instead, I turned them upside down in a crappy plastic cup and painted them that way. I let them dry overnight, then rubbed them with the side of the chalk. I am not really sure why you are supposed to do this, when I wiped it off with a paper towel, you couldn’t tell I rubbed it down. O well, then your done!

SONY DSC

You can set them out for a party with a few pieces of chalk and let friends write their names on their glasses!

Party Time!

cutest ceiling ever!

I am loving our new closet ceiling!

SONY DSC

It was fairly inexpensive and easy to install. We started out with ugly old ceiling tiles that were glued on to the drywall. When we popped them off we were stuck with long weird strips of drywall. We could have mudded and sanded for a million hours, but that was not an option.

SONY DSC

So we decided to do a pallet ceiling and we were in luck bc my work was getting rid of some. There was a pile 10 feet high I was told I could take. But, they were outside and it was pouring down rain. For a week. Boo. So since we really wanted to get on our project, and I didn’t want to put soaking wet pallets in my car, we went to home depot and bought some plywood. We had them rip them in half at the store, then we ripped them into 6″ strips at home. Jon used his nail gun and had them up on the ceiling within a few hours. For those of you who have small kids, you know that when I say it only took a few hours, that it was actually 4 days of 30-45 mins a day. whatever.

SONY DSC

At first we thought about leaving it natural or staining it, but then once it was up it made the room feel a bit dark, so we decided to paint it. We just used a classic white ceiling paint, but we only did 1 coat, so it looks like it is just white washed. It looks sooo great!

SONY DSC

Wait, how cute are those little corner things, no clue what their name is, but $4 is so worth not having to break out the coping saw for that crown. I wish we would have seen these earlier.. damn.

I am loving the progress we are making on our fancy master closet! As soon as it is done, we can finally start on our bedroom. I am pumped!!

More Burlap!

Holy Crap! It’s been 2 weeks since I have been able to get on here.. ahh Not what I wanted, but mommying comes first. I wish I could tell the toddlers to leave me alone so I can craft, but who am I kidding, I can’t even pee alone these days! We have been super busy working on a master closet! I am hoping to reveal that in the next week or 2. I am so excited about it!! Anyways back to this post. Last week I picked up a yard of pink burlap at Hobby Lobby, it was 3.99, then 40% off (so whatever that is). I didn’t know what I was going to use it for, but I love burlap and I love pink! Have you seen the burlap selection these days?? Such cute colors!! I was able to do a lot with only 1 yard.

I used some in place of a mat in a photo frame.

SONY DSC

I love how it looks against the gold frame, that I picked up at GW for 1.99 and spray painted btw!

p.s. how funny is Amelia’s face in this pic??!! I love it!

I’d show you a photo of the whole picture, but as I was taking the pics someone decided to spill yogurt all over the couch and I got distracted, then forgot to take more pics.. damn husband.. jk it was the kids!!

I also jazzed up one of my dollar store candles. Remember I bought a bunch of them and wrapped a few in yarn, then spray painted them. Well this one I like so much more! HA!

SONY DSC

I spray painted it gold with some left over paint. Then wrapped a strip of burlap around it and hot glued it in the back.  I added some twine and a little fabric flower I had and it was done! I totally love it! Dont you! I still have 2 candles left. What shall I do next?!

So after the picture and the candle, I still had a bunch of burlap left. So I decided to cover one of the many chairs I have lying around. I have 9, and 2 benches. OMG I am a chair hoarder!

SONY DSC

So how cute is this chair? I’m picturing it at a desk in a teenage girls room, or in the dressing room of a fun boutique. Someone can sit on it while they are trying on really cute shoes!!

SONY DSC

Well, there are a few of my adventures in Burlap Land!! I still have a little left, I am thinking about making a few burlap flowers to add to the gold frame.. we’ll see!
